MATH CLUB-NEWS
The first season of Crazy 8s Math Club was a huge success. Ten students from grades 3-5 came together one night a week with Mrs. Bostwick, for a little over an hour, to participate in this after school math club for 8 weeks. This was not your normal “math club”, to say the least. But although there were no math problems given, there were plenty of math skills being reinforced as the activities required the students to work together, build together, and run and jump together. During “Glow-in-the Dark Geometry” students explored geometric figures and their attributes by building with glow sticks. “Bouncy Dice Explosion '' was an activity about probability, using some bouncy dice. In “Spy Training” the students explored and decoded secret codes. We used hacky sacks to play floor darts and had to add up our scores (including the double and triple sections) in the “Daring Darts” activity. “Pixel-palooza” night was when we created large pixely pictures out of post-it notes. Our last night was “Toilet Paper Olympics”. During this activity students participated in the long jump and shot put, and then measured the length using toilet paper squares. They then converted this measurement into feet and inches. All in all, the students did practice math skills, got to take home some neat supplies (like the hacky sacks, dice, cards, glowsticks, measuring tapes, etc.), and had a great time, and students indicated that they would love to do another season.
